Scottish National Open Championships Report (Tollcross from 22-27 June)
04-July-2010: The City of Aberdeen Swim Team finished in sixth place at the Scottish National Open Championships held at Tollcross, Glasgow between 22 and 27 June. The Championships followed the Commonwealth Games programme with heats of the open events in the mornings followed by semi-finals and finals for the 50m and 100m events, "A" and "B" finals for the 200m and 400m events, and a single "A" final for the 800m and 1500m freestlye. The afternoons of the last four days were busy occassions with girls 15-and-under and boys 16-and-under age group events, with the 100m and 200m events progressing to finals.
Hayley Monteith was successful in claiming three scottish junior titles. The fifteen-year-old claimed the junior gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, and added a bronze medal in the 15-and-under girls 200m individual medley. Euan Dunbar (15) was the Team's other individual medalist in the open section of the championships winning the junior title in the 400m individual medley. Euan Inglis (16) was a silver medalist in the boys 16-and-under events swimming in the 400m individual medley.
In an exciting finale to the Championships, the girl's 4 x 100m medley relay team of Elizabeth Hughes (16), Hayley Monteith (15), Abigail Proctor (12) and Caitlin Rees (15) claimed the Team's only open medal when they finished in third place, also taking the junior title.
Along with the above medal winning performances, there were a number of record breaking swims. Mark Campbell broke the north district open record for 50m breaststroke three times, Elizabeth Hughes broke age group records at the 50m butterfly (twice), 200m individual medley, and 100m and 200m backstroke, and Euan Inglis broke the 16-year-old record at 50m breaststroke. Mark Campbell, Abigail Proctor, Joanna Anderson, Zoe Grant, Hayley Monteith, Elizabeth Hughes and the girl's medley relay team also broke COAST records.
The Team's "A" finalists were:
- Elizabeth Hughes - 5th 200m backstroke, 6th 400m IM, 8th 200m IM, 9th 100m backstroke, 9th 200m butterfly
- Hayley Monteith - 6th 100m breaststroke, 8th 200m breaststroke, 10th 400m IM
- Michael McGovern - 6th 200m backstroke, 7th 100m backstroke
- Stuart McIntosh - 8th 200m backstroke, 10th 100m backstroke
- Mark Campbell - 9th 50m breaststroke, 10th 200m breaststroke
- Euan Inglis - 9th 1500m freestyle
- Carly Fraser - 9th 200m breaststroke
North District Open Championships (Westhill) Report (5-6 June 2010)
13-June-2010: The City of Aberdeen Swim Team were crowned top team at the North District Open Championships held in Westhill following a number of swimmers gaining district titles.
Elizabeth Hughes (16) won the Open and Junior titles for the 200m backstroke for the fourth consecutive year and added those for the 100m backstroke, both in new north district junior record times. Hayley Monteith (15) became Open and Junior Champion in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, setting a new district junior record time in the shorter event.
Euan Inglis (16) was crowned Open Champion in the 200m breaststroke and 400m individual medley, the Junior title in the latter going to Euan Dunbar (15), whilst the McGovern family were regular visitors to the podium. Timothy (15) won the 800m and 1500m freestyle to take Open and Junior titles in both, Andrew (17) won the 200m backstroke and Michael (17) claimed gold in the 100m backstroke, beating Andrew by a mere 6/100s of a second. The Team's final individual champion was Mark Campbell (18) who won the 50m freestyle.
In addition to individual successes, the Team's relay teams won all four available gold medals. In the men's events the teams consisted of Michael McGovern, Mark Campbell, Euan Dunbar and David Sutherland, whilst the women's 4 x 50 freestyle team comprised Caitlin Rees, Elizabeth Hughes, Zoe Grant and Hayley Monteith. Carly Fraser replaced Zoe in the 4 x 50 medley team.

City of Sunderland Long Course Meet Report (29-30 May 2010)
01-June-2010: The City of Aberdeen Swim Team came third at the City of Sunderland Long Course meet at the weekend following some impressive swims for the team's younger swimmers. Jack Ness (13) once again broke the Scottish age group record when finishing second in the 50m backstroke. He also won 7 golds and a bronze, and collected the award for best 13-year-old boy. Abigail Proctor (11) won 9 gold medals and broke North District records at the 200m butterfly, 100m and 200m backstroke, and the 200m and 400m fresstyle. She was rewarded for her endeavours with the best 11-year-old girl award.

Westhill Invitational Meet Report
18-May-2010: City of Aberdeen swimmers Elizabeth Hughes (16) and Hayley Monteith (15) both broke Scottish age group records at the Westhill Invitational Meet. Swimming in the same heat of the women's 1500m freestyle, Elizabeth won in a time of 17 minutes 1.1 seconds and, for a period of 7.42 seconds, held both the 15 and 16 year old Scottish records until Hayley finished in second place. Their times were the second and third fastest recorded by a female in Britain in 2010.
Other notable swims came from Jack Ness (13) who broke his own Scottish age group records at 50m (finishing 2nd) and 200m backstroke (1st), and Euan Inglis (16) who broke North District records in winning the 800m and 1500m freestyle, and 400IM. He also won the 400m freestyle and the 15/16 year old 200m butterfly. Hayley Monteith came second in the open 50m breaststroke having set a new ND junior record time in the heats and also won the 800m freestyle in a new COAST open record.
In addition to all the above records, there were a number of other gold medal winning performances from:

COAST Receives Top Club Award
2-May-2010: Further to a fantastic team effort at the recent Scottish National Age Group Championships, COAST has been given a sum of £600 in respect of Top Club award by Scottish Swimming.
As well as financially rewarding the club for performance of our swimmers, the award aims to recognise the hard work put in by all involved in developing swimmers to represent the club successfully.
Well Done to swimmers, coaches and all involved.
Scottish National Age Group Championships - Tollcross 8-11 April 2010
23-Apr-2010: The City of Aberdeen Swim Team returned from the recent Scottish National Age Group Championships as top North of Scotland team after finishing fourth overall. The team can also boast ten Scottish titles between six new Scottish Champions.
Hayley Monteith (15) was crowned Scottish Age Group Champion in the 100m and 200m breaststroke along with the 400m individual medley. Timothy McGovern (14) won both the 800m and 1500m freestyle, breaking North District age group records in both, and collected the bronze in the 400m freestyle. Scottish age group record holder Jack Ness (13) won the 100m and 200m backstroke, and was third in the 100m butterfly.
Elizabeth Hughes (16) became Scottish National Age Group Champion when finishing second in the 16-18 year old 1500m freestyle and also collected silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 400m individual medley, all in new North District record times. Rebecca Bews (12) and Abigail Proctor (11) were also crowned National Champions in the 200m and 100m butterfly respectively.
Other individual medalists were Morven Sneddon (14) in the 100m breaststroke and Euan Inglis (16) in the 16-18 year old 1500 freestyle.
The Team's 11-12 year old girls relay team of Joanna Anderson (12), Abigail Proctor (11), Eilidh Duthie (12) and Zoe Grant (12) destroyed the North District records for the 4 x 100m medley and freestyle relays, knocking an impressive 44 seconds off that for the medley. Jack Ness (13), Macleod Stephen (14), Lewis Proctor (13) and Calum Fowler (14) won silver medals in both the 4 x 100m medley and freestyle relays, breaking the North District 13-14 year old record in the frrestyle.
WISE International - Tollcross 20 March 2010
12-Apr-2010: Four COAST swimmers were selected to represent Scotland at the annual Home Nations Schools International meet which was held at Tollcross on 20 March and they all medalled in their individual swims! Each nation could enter two swimmers in each event with each swimmer eligible to swim a maximum of two individual events. The highest placed swimmer from each country scored points.
Jack Ness was first in the pool swimming the 100 backstroke in the 11-14 age group. He started off fast, breaking the Scottish age group record at the 50m mark, but was overtaken by a fast finishing English competitor to take second in a new North District record time. Next up was Hayley Monteith swimming in the 14 to 16 age group 100 breaststroke where she finished third earning valuable points behind the two Irish swimmers.
Elizabeth Hughes was next in the open 200 backstroke where she broke the North District age group record finishing in third behind the two English competitors and well ahead of the rest of the field. Euan Inglis swam fast in the 14 to 16 year old 200 IM where positions changed throughout the race. He finished third behind the two English swimmers to earn more good points for the team. The final individual swim was Elizabeth Hughes' 200 butterfly where she equalled the North District age group record set by former COAST swimmer Nicola Shand whilst competing for Scotland in the same meet in 2007. She finished in second place finish, this time ahead of the English helped with the points total.
England once again won the overall event with Scotland in second ahead of the other Celtic Nations.

Edinburgh International on 13-14 February 2010
26 February 2010: COAST's youngsters were on top form at the Edinburgh International Age Group Championships (on tour) at Tollcross winning three golds and breaking records galore.
Abigail Proctor (11) won gold in the 100 butterfly breaking the Scottish age group record for 50 butterfly in both the heats and final, adding that for the full distance in the heats. She has now broken the 50 butterfly record four times in a two week period!
Zoe Grant won the 11-12 100 freestyle, having broken the COAST age group record for 50 freestyle earlier in the meet. Daniel Tiffen fought back brilliantly in the final of the 11-12 100 breaststroke to win on the touch having been almost a second down at the turn.
Jack Ness was also in record breaking form in the backstroke breaking District records for both the 50 and 100 again in collecting silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200.

Scottish Schools Championships (30 January 2010)
02 February 2010: Having qualified to compete in this meet last November, COAST swimmers were again successful achieving a haul of 14 medals. 12 & under swimmers competed in one 50m event with the potential to progress to a final whilst older swimmers could enter two
heat declared events, with at least one being 200m or more.
Star performance this year came from 11-year-old Abigail Proctor. Swimming for Robert Gordons College she broke the Scottish Age Group Record for 50 butterfly in both the heats and final, winning gold for the second year. Jack Ness, also RGC, won the 200 backstroke breaking the North District record for 50 backstroke on the way. He then broke both the 50 and 100 backstroke records when he won the 100 backstroke.
Euan Inglis (RGC) was crowned Scottish Schools Champion in the open 400 IM where he clawed back a 4.49 second deficit at the half way point to take the title by 1/100th of a second.
Elizabeth Hughes (Harlaw Academy) retained her 15/16-year-old 200 backstroke title and finished second in the 400 IM, missing out on a double by just 9/100ths of a second. She did, however, break the Noth District Age Group record for the event.
Hayley Monteith (RGC) won silver in the 15/16 100 breaststroke, just 4/100ths behind the winner, and was third in the 200 IM. Euan Dunbar (Portlethen Academy) was also a double-medalist collecting bronze in both the 15/16 100 butterfly and 200 IM.

Scottish National Open Short Course Championships - Glasgow (15 to 17 January 2010)
29 January 2010: The Scottish Short Course Championships were held at Tollcross between 15 and 17 January with open events in the mornings leading to fianls in the evening. The top 10 from the heats progressed to the "A" final and the next 10 to the "B" final.
Day one saw Elizabeth Hughes retain her Scottish 800 freestyle Junior title when she finished 4th, one place ahead of Hayley Monteith. Elizabeth also made A finals in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly finishing in 8th and 5th place respectively. In the butterfly final she broke the longest standing North District Age Group record which had stood for just over 25 years. Hayley also made her way into the A final for the 100 breaststroke finishing 9th. Staurt McIntosh was the only COAST male to reach an A final, finishing 9th in the 200m backstroke.
The Team's B finalists were: Mark Campbell, 1st in both the 100 IM and 50 breaststroke, Carly Fraser, 2nd in the 100 breaststroke, Euan Inglis, 4th 200 backstroke, 5th 400 freestyle and 9th 50 breaststroke, Morven Sneddon, 6th 100 breaststroke, Andrew McGovern, 7th 200 backstroke and Hayley Monteith 8th 200 IM.
COAST's first success on day two came from Jack Ness as he broke his own Scottish age group record for a 13-year-old in the heats of the 50 backstroke. Later in the day another great distance swim from Euan Inglis, where he was in the mix all through the race, saw him win his first senior national medal with a hard fought bronze. Elizabeth Hughes again made two A finals finishing 4th in the 200 backstroke and 8th in the 400 freestyle. Hayley Monteith was 7th in the 50 breaststroke whilst Rebecca Craigmile came 10th in the 200 backstroke in her first ever A final.
In the B finals, Mark Campbell completed a hat-trick of wins by taking 1st in the 100 breaststroke along with a 6th in the 200 IM. Hayley Monteith won the 100 IM and came 8th in the 200 backstroke. Morven Sneddon won the 50 breaststroke B final. Other B finalists were: Carly Fraser, 4th 50 breaststroke, Euan Inglis 9th 200 IM, Euan Dunbar, 10th 200 butterfly and Stuart McIntosh, 10th 200 IM.
Day three saw the team double their medal count with Elizabeth Hughes finishing 5th in the 400 IM and Hayley Monteith 5th in the 200 breaststroke both being crowned Scottish Junior Champions. Hayley broke the North District age group record in winning her gold medal and also finished 10th in the A final of the 400 IM, whilst Euan Inglis finished 8th in the mens equivalent. Carly Fraser was 10th in the 200 breaststroke. In the heats of the 100 backstroke, Jack Ness was again in record breaking form as he swam inside his own North District age group record.
There were a number of runners up in the final batch of B finals. Mark Campbell (200 breaststroke), Stuart McIntosh (400 IM) and Elizabeth Hughes (100 backstroke) all finished 2nd, whilst Euan Inglis and Morven Sneddon both finished 3rd in their respective finals of the 200 breaststroke. Stuart McIntosh achieved an 8th place finish in the 100 backstroke.
New COAST Policy and Code of Conduct Documents on the Website
24 January 2010: CPO has issued new documents 1) Code of Conduct for Officials and Volunteers and 2) Policy for Use of Photographic Equipments. These, along with the updated Child Protection Policy, are now availbale from the Member's Zone (COAST Documents) on this website.
North District Age Group Meet - Inverness (5-6 December 2009)
10 December 2009: COAST's younger swimmers attended this meet at Inverness Aquadome and finished off COAST's year with more North District records. Abigail Proctor broke the 11-year-old 100 butterfly record (again!) and added the 200 butterfly to her steadily growing tally. Joanna Anderson also broke two 11-year-old records - the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke (previously held by Abi!).
Snow Frills Winter Meet - Sheffield (4-6 December 2009)
10 December 2009: Six of COAST's senior swimmers made the long round trip to Sheffield to get in some long course competition. There were some fantastic swims with Mark Campbell breaking the North District open records for 100 and 200 breastsroke, Hayley Monteith breaking the ND junior records also for the 100 and 200 breaststroke, along with age group records for 50 breaststroke and 800 freestyle, and Euan Inglis breaking his own ND junior record for 800 freestyle.
Hayley collected two gold medals whilst Euan won a gold, two silvers and a bronze.
